Examine European Culture & History
INTRAV’S FOCUSED ADVENTURES
EXAMINE EUROPEAN CULTURE, HISTORY
ST. LOUIS, February 8, 2006 — International-tour operator INTRAV offers a series of focused getaways in Europe this year to present an in-depth look at emerging areas that are yet to be overcome by the influx of tourists. These eight- or nine-day journeys concentrate on a specific region or one distinct theme to provide a comprehensive representation of an area. The planned trips explore southwestern France, Italy’s southeastern coast, Portugal’s Douro River Valley, or the Blue Danube, as well as offer an enchanting look at the holiday celebrations in Germany and Austria.
“With so many wonderful sights and interesting cultures from which to choose, INTRAV has designed these focused adventures to help make a European vacation a little less daunting,” President David Drier said. “These trips combine scenic beauty, an interesting mix of cultures, and remarkable history to create a better understanding of the people and places that make these areas special. And, since they’re virtually all-inclusive and priced in U.S. dollars, these journeys offer a more affordable option than traveling independently — where the costs for accommodations, meals, transportation, and sightseeing are all dependent on the fluctuating exchange rate.”
These shorter, more intimate journeys provide guests not only with wonderful opportunities to discover classic destinations, but also with a more economical way to see many of Europe’s secret treasures. Passengers will enjoy fantastic meals in local cafés and restaurants, or aboard one of several small-ship vessels, to gain a better understanding of the local flavor. Included special events and sightseeing on each itinerary also enhance enjoyment of the areas visited, with extensive leisure time set aside for personal exploration. In addition to the comfort and convenience provided by first-rate accommodations that are selected for their amenities, locations, and service, English-speaking regional experts and an experienced travel staff accompany these trips to simplify travel and provide additional insight.
Six focused discoveries are planned in Europe from April through December 2006, including:
Italy’s Apulia – An Undiscovered Gem — This nine-day getaway that departs from April through October showcases the rustic towns and seaside fishing villages that dot Italy’s southeastern coast. Highlights are a full-day excursion that includes the octagonal Castle del Monte — a UNESCO World Heritage Site built in 1240 — and a visit to Trulli to view the eponymous whitewashed cone buildings exclusively found in the region. Rate is $2,495 per person, double occupancy.
Scenic Vistas and Vineyards of Portugal’s Douro River Valley — Departing from April through September, this nine-day cruise aboard the 48-passenger Douro Prince unveils many treasures along the “River of Gold.” Traveling round-trip from Porto — famous for the port wine produced here — guests will enjoy a special dinner at Alpendurada Monastery and a walking tour through Spain’s historic Salamanca. Rates begin at $2,095 per person, double occupancy.
France’s Dordogne Valley and Prehistoric Treasures — A new journey for INTRAV in 2006, this nine-day adventure features the prehistoric art at Les-Eyzies-de-Tayac and Lascaux, as well as the noted viticultural and culinary treasures of southwestern France. With the Domaine de Rochebois serving as home base for the getaway that departs from May through September, travelers will venture out on escorted day trips to discover little-known treasures, such as the cliffside village of Rocamadour and the gourmet treats in Sarlat. They’ll also visit the Saint-Émilion vineyards and enjoy a walking tour of the city during a day in Bordeaux that includes an overnight at the Hôtel Burdigala. Rate is $3,195 per person, double occupancy.
Exploring Hemingway’s Europe — The culture, cuisine, and history of the Basque region are the focus of this eight-day journey in France and Spain that departs from June through September. From their home base at the Grand Hotel in St.-Jean-de-Luz, passengers will enjoy a full day in the fashionable resort town of Biarritz, a tour of the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, and an evening filled with tapas treats in San Sebastian. Rate is $2,895 per person, double occupancy.
